Virginia EMS Refresher

FOAMfrat Studio offers CAPCE-accredited continuing education courses accepted by the NREMT for Virginia EMTs, AEMTs, and Paramedics—meeting both national and state-specific requirements 

Virginia follows NREMT requirements for EMS recertification. All certifications are renewed every two years and follow the National Continued Competency Program (NCCP) model with three components: national, local/state, and individual education components.

EMT Refresher

40 hours total continuing education required

National: 20 Hours

Local/State: 10 Hours

Individual: 10 Hours

AEMT Refresher

50 hours total continuing education required

National: 25 Hours

Local/State: 12.5 Hours

Individual: 12.5 Hours

Paramedic Refresher

60 hours total continuing education required

National: 30 Hours

Local/State: 15 Hours

Individual: 15 Hours

Our CAPCE-Accredited courses are automatically imported to your NREMT Transcript using the 'Import CAPCE Courses' on your NREMT Transcript page. 

FOAMfrat is a Virginia OEMS approved CE Provider and  reports CE completions directly to the VA EMS Portal.

  • EMTs- every 4 years to the end date of the month of issuance

  • AEMTs, EMT-Is & Paramedics- every 3 years to the end date of the month of issuance

Virginia CE Levels: 

Continuing Education (CE) is categorized into Category 1 – Required and Category 2 – Approved. In CAT 1, CE is further divided into five containers.  Each container requires a different number of hours to recertify. The containers are: Airway, Cardiovascular, Trauma, Medical and Operations.  

  • Category 1 – Required – NCCR

    • NCCR - National Continued Competency Requirements

  • Category 2 – ‘Flexible’ – LCCR/ICCR

    • LCCR - Local Continued Competency Requirements

    • ICCR – Individual Continued Competency Requirements
